Managing Self to Lead Others
Managing one's self is about managing personal feeling, personal attitudes, personality preferences and personal behaviors to bring out the best in one's self and others vs the worst. This is not to say that a manager assumes a false and manipulative personality or behaviors. Clearly a quarterback on a given football play may have negative feelings about another player but still must throw that person the ball at times to win the game. On days when a manager has a personal problem outside of work, he/she does not allow related feelings get in the way of how they can best lead their employees.
Managing Self, Leading Others to be most effective means managers need to be:
- Competent in his/her job
- Committed to the organization and its people
- Trustworthy, reliable and honest
- Fair
- Respectful to everyone, every time
- Avoiding under managing and over managing
- In control of one's behavior and not letting personal feelings dominate actions
- Trusting others to be responsible and intelligent
Managers that are truly effective recognize that individuals and work teams need to be experts in their jobs and that people are an organization's best resource only when they are effectively engaged.
Basic Guidelines for Effective Self-Management
Managers leading engaged employees to develop, achieve and maintain high performance through their own self-management do not need to become psychologists or undergo psychological analysis, but they do need to:
- Understand themselves and others
- Learn personality preferences or styles by utilizing instruments such as our Attribute Index, DISC Index, or Values Index assessments
- At times manage their behavior "against" their personal preferences, especially when they want to jump in to immediately solve problems when an empowered and engaged work team is capable
- Recognizing that effective leadership requires behaviors that they may find uncomfortable
- Remember that leadership is about getting others to do the right things in the right ways
Implementing Effective Employee Engagement
- Develop and implement an employee engagement plan
- Ask people for their help and their contributions in improving the organization
- Model and teach the preferred behaviors
- Provide employees with all the information needed to succeed
- Take one step at a time and gradually empower individuals and build strong teams
- Support people even when they make mistakes and help them learn from them
- Be prepared for resistance from employees, supervisors and others
- Ask people to give necessary new behaviors a chance
